Shigaraki went in for the kill every time. This sort of play wouldn't make sense with any of his previous attempts even within just the last battle. He'd only played around very early on and those times he'd intended to go further but only been stopped by circumstance - fortunately.
But the two of them are always mirrored opposites. Katsuki has always been quicker to distrust and assume the worst; Izuku is quicker to trust and assume the best. He'd been a little jumpy initially but quick to work with others, and his trust hadn't been blind so much as analytically well informed. He's always been irritatingly fast on the uptake when it comes to working out Quirks, and that includes being able to note and extrapolate from the telltale signs for them.
For all of that he's still pretty lost as to what's happening, but Izuku's quick to tow Katsuki upwards if he doesn't spot gills. Assuming he's allowed, anyway, since he knows he can move pretty fast right now. ]
